Farmers protest against fall in prices of tomatoes and small onions at Coimbatore District Collectorate

Led by the Tamil Nadu Farmers' Association President S Palanisamy, the protesting farmers dumped tomatoes and small onions on the ground in front of the Coimbatore District Collectorate and raised slogans to press for their demands.

Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Farmers' Unions staged a demonstration at the Coimbatore District Collectorate by dumping tomatoes and small onions on the ground in front of the Coimbatore District Collectorate and raised slogans to press for their demands.

The demonstration was led by the Tamil Nadu Farmers' Union President, S Palanisamy who also filed a petition at the District Collectorate.

Due to the continuous decline of tomato and small onion prices for the past few months, the Government has appointed Horticulture officers to provide appropriate relief to the affected farmers.

Small onions were planted in an area of nearly 25,000 hectares in the Thondamuthur area of Coimbatore. Farmers are now reportedly suffering due to inadequate prices during the tomato harvesting season.

The farmers lamented that the Government has stated that even wages for agriculturists were scarce. They also felt that along with appointing Horticulture officials to provide adequate relief to the affected farmers, the Government should also procure small onions and sell them through fair-price shops. The protesters also demanded permission for exports.
