Water level in Aliyar Dam rises to 117 ft.

Incessant rains in the catchment areas of the Aliyar Dam for the past few days has resulted in the water level of the Aliyar Dam increasing.


Coimbatore: With incessant rains in the catchment areas of Aliyar Dam for the past few days, the water level of the Aliyar Dam which has the capacity to store up to 120 feet has risen to 117 feet as of 8 am on August 4.

Water is usually released from the Aliyar Dam, near Pollachi in Coimbatore district for irrigation and drinking water purposes. The drinking water needs of the surrounding villages of Pollachi, Kinathukkadavu, Kurichi and Kuniyamuthur areas of Coimbatore are also supplied by the Aliyar Dam. A total of 48,000 acres of land are being irrigated through the old Ayakatu irrigation and new Ayakatu irrigation. The Aliyar Dam also releases water to Kerala.

The inflow of water is 3894 cubic feet per second. 2636 cubic feet of water is being released from the Aliyar Dam for irrigation and drinking water needs. Earlier, a flood warning was issued to people living near the Aliyar Dam since the water level of the dam was rising.

The District Public Works Department has requested the public to be extra cautious near the river basin areas and to avoid playing in the rivers.
