'Official refused to receive our petition' - Tirupur Farmers stage sit-in protest alleging ill-treatment meted out to them

Farmers belonging to the "Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Padhukapu Sangam", accompanied by the Itchipattti and Kodangipalayam villagers staged a sit-in dharna at the Tirupur collectorate, alleging of ill-treatment meted out to them by the Assistant Director (mines) while they came to petition at the District collectorate, here on Monday.


Coimbatore: The people mostly farmers alleged that the Assistant Director of Mines, Dr K.L.K Vallal abused them and a quarrel ensued between the farmers and the official, when the latter refused to accept the petition and walked out of his office.



Following which the farmers thronged the Tirupur Collectorate seeking official action against the irregularities committed by the 34 quarries operating in the vicinity of Itchipatti, and Kodangipalayam and prayed for punitive action against the erring quarry owners.

Alleging that the stone quarry operators are engaged in using high-decibel dynamites against rules, thus causing noise pollution,they said that the fumes emanating from these quarries have proved to be a health hazard for both the people and their cattle.



"The groundwater table has also gone down and affected due to the illegal activities of these quarry operators" the farmers alleged.

However, the police intervened and requested the farmers to submit the petition after some time, but the irked farmers were disappointed when the said official again ignored them and refused to accept theirpetition.

Enraged, by the ill-treatment meted out to them, the farmers tore up their petition and left the premises in a huff. The incident created a flutter in the Tirupur collectorate campus for a brief period.
