Coimbatore: A review meeting on organ transplants was held in Coimbatore with the Deans of all Government Medical Colleges in Tamil Nadu at the premises of the Government Hospital in Coimbatore on Sunday.
The TN Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Ma. Subramanian and the Electricity Minister, V Senthil Balaji presided over the review meeting.
The Deans of all Government Medical Colleges in Tamil Nadu and the Coimbatore District Collector, G S Sameeran were present at the meeting.
The Deans elucidated on the steps taken thus far for organ transplantation at their respective District Medical College Hospitals and the waiting list.
They also requested more facilities for the development of the hospital and the requirement for modern equipment.
"The Tamil Nadu Organ Transplant Authority was established by the late Kalaignar Karunanidhi in 2008. It was only then that organ transplantation became so important and the Tamil Nadu Organ Transplant Authority was the guiding body for India. Since then, 1524 donors have agreed to organ transplantation. The total use of elements is 5557.
Out of this, 711 organs were received from 1524 brain-dead donors, including 711 for heart transplants, 676 for lung transplants, 1404 for liver transplants, 33 for pancreas, 5 for the small intestine, 1 for the stomach, and 4 for hands, etc. Even though organ donation work has slowed down across India during the Covid-19 pandemic, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu should speed up organ transplants and donors should be encouraged," stated Minister Ma. Subramanian.
"Since today's organ transplant meeting is underway, we must expedite the projects of organ transplants. Since the DMK Government assumed office, until July 2022, there are 114 member donors. Out of this, 479 organs have been received and 588 people have benefited. Though Tamil Nadu is at the forefront of organ donation, the demand is high.
Accordingly, 6483 people are waiting for kidneys, 380 for liver, 43 for heart, 42 for lungs, 2 for the pancreas and 23 for hands. It is to be noted that Tamil Nadu is the only state in India where six people have benefited from bone transplants and membrane transplants in Government Hospitals. The work of setting up artificial limbs for the needy across Tamil Nadu is also continuing.
Similarly, in the last 14 months alone, 588 people have benefited from the Chief Minister's Insurance Scheme. Under the 'Doorstep Healthcare' scheme, 82,43,875 people have benefited," listed Min. Ma. Subramanian.
The Minister for Health and Family Welfare stated that a sum of Rs. 36.60 crore has been allocated for the purchase of additional equipment for the Coimbatore Government Hospital and Rs. 34.5 crore has been allocated for the Accident and Surgery Centre at ESI Hospital. "In addition, three reconciliation centres have been arranged at the Government Hospital in Coimbatore at a cost of Rs.2.73 crore for genetics.
Similarly, Rs.13 lakh has been allocated for the purchase of a dialysis machine and a new emergency care centre will be set up at a cost of Rs. 53 lakh. Along with this, funds will be allocated for the implementation of paid treatment at the Coimbatore Government Hospital at an estimated cost of Rs 1 crore," he added.
"Though monkeypox has spread to 80 countries, there has been no cases in Tamil Nadu thus far, but it cannot be said with certainty that Tamil Nadu will not be affected. The rumours of monkeypox infection spread in Trichy and Nagercoil has been unfounded since the test reports of those tested showed negative. Despite our vulnerabilities, there is no need for the Government to hide anything since we have the necessary facilities such as laboratories to test monkeypox," stated the TN Health Minister.
"As far as the booster vaccine against Covid-19 is concerned, 3.5 crore people will be vaccinated. Action is being taken in this regard. Thus far, 37,33,957 people have been administered the booster vaccine. This means that 9.63 percent of the population has been vaccinated with the booster dose. The second dose has been administered to 88.62 percent of the respondents. The 33rd Mega Vaccination Drive will be held on August 7 at 50,000 locations to ensure that everyone is vaccinated," he reiterated.
The Health Minister, Ma. Subramanian stated that Tamil Nadu has the highest number of medical staff. "Efforts are on to fill up 4308 vacancies in the medical department. Action will be taken to fill up the vacancies by September or October," he concluded.
