Agriculture West Zone Committee Meeting for Agriculture Officers and Farmers held at TNAU in Coimbatore

At the Agriculture West Zone meeting held in Coimbatore, plans were afoot to achieve the food grain production target of 77.610 metric tons.


The Agriculture West Zone Committee meeting for Agriculture Department officers and farmers was held under the Chairmanship of the Director, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Annadurai at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU).



Director Annadurai discussed crop cultivation suited to the situation, management of natural hazards, management of cash crop and pest control, and production of quality products. He also enquired about the opinions of farmers in the Western region and the problems they face. The farmers responded that in the Western region there was a lot of crop damage due to wild animals and peacocks, wild boars and elephants. They also complained that they were not receiving the compensation amount for banana and coconut crop damage due to strong winds and cyclones and hence demanded provision of the same. While the procurement of copra through source price is to end on July 31, the farmers that it should continue till December 31.



According to the Tamil Nadu Government's separate financial status report to the Department of Agriculture in Coimbatore district, coconut is cultivated in an area of 88.647 acres (2022-23), paddy is cultivated in an area of 1000 hectares, small grains in an area of 30.350 hectares and pulses in an area of 91 hectares. Plans were afoot at the meeting to to achieve the food grain production target of 77.610 metric tons.

The Coimbatore District Collector, G S Sameeran presided over the event at TNAU in which District Forest Officer Ashokumar, District Revenue Officer, District Rural Development Agency Project Director Kavitha, Agriculture Department Joint Director Chithradevi, Agriculture Deputy Director Tamilchelvi and many other officers and farmers of the Zonal Agriculture Department participated.
