106 lost and stolen mobile phones handed back to respective owners at SP office in Coimbatore

As many as 106 mobile phones worth Rs.60 lakh were handed over to respective owners in Coimbatore district based on complaints lodged.



Coimbatore: Coimbatore City Police held an event at the office of the District Superintendent of Police on Wednesday, in which 106 mobile phones worth Rs. 60 lakh had been reported as lost or stolen by the public.



The District Superintendent of Police, V Badrinarayanan handed over the mobile phones back to the respective owners at the event.



Speaking to the media later, SP Badrinarayanan stated that mobile phones which had been lost and valued at Rs. 60 lakh had been found and returned to the rightful owners.



"Since April till now, a total of 350 mobile phones have been found and handed over. Also, since April till date, 149 POCSO cases have been filed, with 60 cases in Court and 9 cases have brought conviction for the perpetrators. Serious measures are being taken to prevent crime against children. We are also investigating whether the criminals will get due punishment through the crime journal.

Awareness is being created in schools for 28 days through the school projects and thus far 36,000 have been made aware. 12,000 children under 10 years of age were met, 2 crimes have been detected and the criminals have been arrested through this project," detailed the District Superintendent of Police, V Badrinarayanan.

"347 criminals have been arrested, 332 cases have been registered and 3 half tons of gutka have been seized to prevent drugs such as Pan Masala Gutka among students. Action has been taken against 125 shops to prevent the increase in sales of Pan Masala in petty stores and five shops have been sealed.

Regarding ganja, we have registered 126 cases since last April and 250 kg of ganja has been seized. By August 15, five people will be charged with gangsterism in connection with this incident. A seller from Kumbakonam has been arrested in connection with the use of painkillers in drugs and no one should sell painkillers in medical shops without a doctor's note.

Regarding criminal cases, since April, we have arrested 311 criminals and have confiscated a total of Rs, 1,51,08380. There are 10,000 cameras across the district and we are setting up more cameras," added the Coimbatore District SP.



SP Badrinarayanan also stated that accidents had become less by 10 percent than before the Covid pandemic. "There have been 387 accidents and in the last five years, we have tracked those who caused more than two accidents and identified 714 vehicles and recommended cancellation of license of 286 heavy vehicles. There are also various complaints about the transgender menace in various places, especially in Thudiyalur and Goundampalayam areas.

We have called them and advised them through social welfare organisations. After consulting with the District Collector, research is now being done on how best to create employment for them," he added.

As regards the Atukkal human rights violation issue, the SP assured that he had personally conducted a field inspection to pacify the BJP protestors there. He also added that a complaint has been received by the Tahsildar there and a legal inquiry is presently being conducted.
