2 shops in Coimbatore sealed for selling gutka in violation of repeated warnings; 7 shops fined

The police have also warned of criminal action if the sale of gutka continues.

Coimbatore: Various measures are being taken to control the sale of gutka across Coimbatore district. In particular, it was announced that strict action would be taken against those found selling gutka and tobacco products in violation of the Government's prohibitory orders.

However, in view of the illegal sale of gutka continuing in the district, the District Superintendent of Police, Badrinarayanan has ordered strict penalties to be imposed on offenders. Rs. 5,000 will be slapped as a fine on first-time offenders who are caught selling gutka and tobacco products in their shops. Rs. 10,000 will be imposed as a penalty for those caught for the second time but shops will be sealed for repeat offenders.

The District Police and Food Safety Department officials conducted surprise inspections of petty shops and grocery stores in various parts of Coimbatore district on Monday. A fine of Rs. 5,000 was imposed on each of the seven shops that were found to be selling gutka products. Two other grocery shops were sealed for failing to heed repeated warnings against selling gutka and tobacco. The police have also warned of criminal action if the illegal sale of gutka and tobacco products continues.
