Despite Tata takeover, only one Air India flight operated from Coimbatore Airport irks passengers

Presently Air India is operating only one flight at Coimbatore between Delhi-Coimbatore-Delhi via Chennai. We request the Tata group management to consider starting more services at Coimbatore Airport in the upcoming days - D. Nandakumar, Director, Kongu Global Forum.

Coimbatore: Coimbatore International Airport serves the aviation needs of peoples of surrounding seven districts. Nearly 50 lakh people and approximately Rs. 60,000 crore worth GDP is generated from the Kongu region every year.

Post pandemic outbreak the situation at the airport both in the flight services and passenger movements has started to witness a steady growth. Presently, everyday on an average 25 flights are operated. On some days, 27 flights have been operated in a single day. In the International sector, two flight services are provided; Coimbatore - Singapore (Scoot Airlines) and Coimbatore-Sharjah (Air Arabia).

In the domestic sector, services are provided to various cities such as Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Pune etc. Airlines such as Indigo, Vistara, Go First, and Air India are providing connectivity to various services.

Indigo Airline's continues to do be the top airline, providing more than 15 Flight services at Coimbatore every day. Though many new airlines provide service, Air India had its separate share of patrons due to the connectivity provided to several cities.

Before 'Covid-19' pandemic outbreak, Air India was providing 2 flight services. One flight between Delhi-Coimbatore-Delhi via Chennai and another direct flight service between Coimbatore- Mumbai. Currently, despite the situation returning to normalcy, Air India is providing only one service which is the Coimbatore to Delhi flight. The direct flight service to Mumbai has not yet restarted. Passengers who used to use this flight have questioned this lack of service.

Commenting on this, Air India sources said, "Presently Air India is operating only one flight at Coimbatore between Delhi -Coimbatore-Delhi via Chennai. Till now we don't have any official information regarding the restarting of services between Coimbatore-Mumbai or any other routes. We have also forwarded the request to start flight service between Coimbatore-Dubai and various new services in the domestic sector. We also hope in future more new services would be added at Coimbatore.”

Kongu Global Forum (KGF) Director D. NandaKumar said, "Passengers are continuously expecting Air India to start new direct flight service between Coimbatore- Dubai and various services in the domestic sector. Various requests has been already made. After Tata group took over the Air India, the expectations among the passengers has been high.

But it is so unfortunate to witness things have not changed. Only one Air India service is provided at Coimbatore International Airport. Despite many airlines providing services Air India airlines has a separate fans list among the total passengers who prefer to travel only in Air India flights. We request the Tata group management to consider starting more services at Coimbatore Airport in the upcoming days."
