Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Forest Department personnel patrolled the Kempanur forest on Thursday evening and found a one-month-old male elephant calf dead in the Attukkal forest area.
Subsequently, higher officials of the Forest Department conducted an inspection there. Later, the team decided that it was late in the evening and considering the movement of wild animals, the medical team headed by Veterinary Medical Officer Sukumar was scheduled to conduct an autopsy on the dead calf on Friday morning.
The Forest Department officials have stated that the cause of the death of the baby elephant will be known only after the autopsy. Earlier, a two-month-old male cub was found dead in Sirumugai forest, last week. The recurring elephant deaths in Coimbatore forest reserve areas have caused sadness among forest officials and forest enthusiasts.
