Police Commissioner inaugurates counter-timer facility fitted at pedestrian crossing signal on Avinashi Road in Coimbatore

The signals on Avinashi Road in Coimbatore have been repaired and a countdown timer has been set up for pedestrians to pass through.

Coimbatore: There are countdown timers at the traffic signals at major road junctions in Coimbatore city for vehicles to pass through. But, since there are no separate countdown timers for pedestrians to cross the signals, not knowing how much time is still left to cross the road, pedestrians have had to cross the road nervously.

To aid pedestrians for a smooth road-crossing, the City Police Commissioner, V Balakrishnan has taken the step of connecting countdowns to all the signals in the city for pedestrians to pass through. In the first phase, the existing signals on Avinashi Road in Coimbatore have been repaired and a countdown timer has been set up for pedestrians to pass through.

The service was inaugurated by the Police Commissioner at Lakshmi Mills signal, on Monday evening.

Also, to make motorists aware of this, loudspeakers are installed at the signal and karaokes of film songs are played for the motorists waiting at the signals to listen to. In addition, the police personnel on duty have been given mics to warn those contibuting for traffic jams.

Similarly, work is underway to implement the system at all the signals across the city at the earliest.
