Incessant rains lash Nilgiris district; 3 dams including Kundah opened

Three dams in the Nilgiris, Kundah (89 ft.), Pillur (100 ft.) and Sandynallah (49 ft.) have reached their full capacity and had to be opened for surplus water to be released to ensure safety.

The Southwest Monsoon has intensified in the Nilgiris. On Thursday morning, as of 8.30 am, the maximum rainfall recorded was 227 mm in Gudalur, 195 mm in Avalanche and 179 mm in Upper Bhavani. Due to strong winds, trees were uprooted in many places across Ooty. A car was damaged after a tree fell on it in the HPF area. Traffic was disrupted for over five hours after a tree fell on the ATC Main Road.

Firefighters, police and highway crew cleared trees to ensure a smooth flow of traffic. A 110-KV high voltage line fell due to strong winds in Ooty's Thalaikundah area and due to the blackout, there were no casualties. In the Edakadu area, tea bushes were washed away in plantations due to landslides.

Landslides occurred in Idalar, Emerald and Palada areas causing destruction to vegetable fields. With the Meteorological Department announcing that rains will continue for the next two days, the District administration has stepped up disaster prevention measures. 456 relief camps have been kept ready.
