Police arrest man who hacked mother-in-law to death with sickle near Pollachi

Kottur police registered a case and arrested a man who hacked his mother-in-law to death with a sickle during an argument over his divorce.


Coimbatore: A man who hacked his mother-in-law with a sickle near Pollachi has been arrested, while the police are looking for his friend who is absconding.

Santosh (32), a resident of Odayakulam near Pollachi is a coconut-dealer. In 2018, he fell in love with Sivapriya, the daughter of Udayakumar and Nityalakshmi from Kottoor and married her. Thereafter, Santosh reportedly often came home drunk. Finally, his wife's mother Nityalakshmi reportedly filed a case in the Pollachi court seeking divorce for her daughter.

In this regard, on Tuesday, Santosh and his friend Saravanakumar went to the shop run by Nityalakshmi in Kottur and reportedly got into an argument regarding the divorce. In the course of their heated argument, Santosh allegedly took the sickle that he had hidden and attacked Nityalakshmi who sustained injuries on her head and hands. Passers-by rescued Nityalakshmi and rushed her to the Pollachi Government Hospital.

Nityalakshmi was later admitted to a private hospital in Coimbatore for further treatment. Based on her complaint, the Kotur police registered a case against Santosh and arrested him. The police are also on the lookout for his friend Saravanakumar, who is reportedly absconding.
