Ayyappan and Saraswathi hail from the Murugala Adivasi village in Attappadi in Kerala near Anaikatti in Coimbatore district. Sajeswari, their four-month-old baby had fallen ill and was admitted to the Palakkad Government Hospital for treatment. Being unresponsive to the treatment at the hospital, the baby died and was handed back to the couple after a post-mortem.
