In the wake of three accidents on the new flyover, the City Police Commissioner V Balakrishnan held discussions with officials of the Highways Department on further safety measures to be taken to ensure motorists' safety.
Coimbatore: A two-wheeler rider died on the spot after falling from a height of 40 feet on the city's Ramanathapuram-Sungam new flyover. Within a month of the opening of the flyover, three accidents resulting in deaths have come as a shock to both locals and the administration.
The Highways Department constructed a high-level flyover between Ramanathapuram and Sungam in Coimbatore for a distance of 3.3 kilometers at a cost of Rs. 253 crore. The flyover was opened for public use on June 11. Two days after the flyover opened for traffic, 28-year-old Prashant who was speeding on a two-wheeler, crashed into a barrier and died.
In another incident 10 days ago, 24-year-old Hariharan from Erode district who was speeding on a two-wheeler in the same area crashed into the barrier wall and fell off the flyover, dying instantly. On the orders of the City Police Commissioner V Balakrishnan, the Deputy Commissioner of Transport and Highways Department conducted an inspection on the flyover due to the spate of accidents on the flyover.
Also, in the first phase of the construction of the flyover, iron barricades and speed barriers were erected. Thereafter, speed bumps were also erected at eight places. Also, notice boards related to speed limits and flashing lights were installed on the flyover. The police too have been sensitizing the public to drive at a moderate speed while crossing the flyover.
On Thursday morning, Anandakumar (51) of Townhall Thomas Veedhi, who was headed to Singanallur on his two-wheeler lost control near the toll gate and fell off the flyover from a height of about 40 feet. He died tragically on the spot.
