Water level in Coimbatore's Siruvani dam rises to 26.14 ft.

With the southwest monsoon continuing unabated, the water level in Siruvani Dam has risen to 26.14 ft.


Coimbatore: The water level in Siruvani Dam has risen to 26.14 ft. due to continuous rains in the Western Ghats range.

Located in the Western Ghats, in Coimbatore district, the Siruvani Dam is the most important source of drinking water for the people of Coimbatore. In the last 11 days, 691 mm of rainfall has been recorded. The Municipal Corporation and the Drinking Wter Drainage Board are monitoring rainfall in the area. The southwest monsoon rains are from June to September, but due to insufficient rainfall last June, the water level in Siruvani Dam kept decreasing.

The water level in the dam was 13.15 ft. on June 30. The catchment area has been receiving rainfall since July 1. 637 mm of rainfall was recorded in 10 days from July 1 to 10. On the morning of July 11, till 8 am, 54 mm was recorded at the Siruvani Dam and 20 mm at the base. The water level had risen to 26.14 ft. In the last 11 days, 691 mm of rainfall has been recorded. Since then, the water level has risen to 13 ft.

According to the Drinking Water and Drainage Board, the water level in Siruvani Dam had risen to 26.14 ft., due to continuous southwest monsoon rains. When the water level exceeds 30 ft. in the dam, three of the four valves in the water injection well are submerged and hence the water outflow into Coimbatore will increase.
