Heavy rains lash Nilgiris; Giant trees fall causing traffic disruption

42 zonal teams are actively monitoring the disaster prevention activities in Nilgiris district.

The Nilgiris: Heavy rains and strong winds in Ooty and surrounding areas on Sunday night resulted in the uprooting of giant trees in many places causing disruption of traffic.

The Nilgiris district has been experiencing widespread rains for the past few days. On Sunday morning, as of 8 am, the maximum rainfall was recorded at Devala at 103 mm and Avalanche at 93 mm. The minimum temperature in Ooty is 9 degrees Celsius, while the maximum is 14 degrees Celsius. A tree was uprooted across the road near Kamaraj Sagar Dam on the Ooty-Gudalur road.

Similarly, giant trees fell at several places on the roads to Glenmorgan, Parsons Valley, Korakundah and Avalanche, disrupting traffic which was cleared only after firemen cut the tree.

Ooty District Collector, S P Amrith said, "Thus far, the district has not been affected by southwest monsoon to any great extent. The 42-zonal teams are actively monitoring the disaster prevention activities. If the public informs the district administration about any trees that could be dangerous, steps will be taken to remove them soon," he added.
