The railway enthusiast team members met the Madurai Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) and put forth various requests including restoration of train services to Coimbatore via Palani, at the earliest.
Coimbatore: With requests already pouring in to restore operation of various express and passenger trains via Coimbatore, Mettupalayam and Pollachi, members of railway enthusiast team met the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) and discussed on the issue.
During the meet, the team members including K. Jayaraj, Shanmugasundaram requested the DRM to look into the issues of restoring train services including operation of train services to Coimbatore via Palani, which is the shortest route, at the earliest.
The following are the trains listed by the team to the DRM.
- Tiruchendur train must be re-routed from Pollachi via Kinathukadavu and Coimbatore to Mettupalayam. An AC Chair Car coach can be added and departure from Coimbatore to Madurai should be at 5.45 AM.
- Madurai to Coimbatore Intercity Express via Palani must be restored immediately. This service can originate and culminate from Thoothukudi early in the morning, as a Superfast Express train with an AC Chair Car, with departure from Coimbatore at 2 PM.
- Restoration of the historic express from Rameswaram to Coimbatore via Madurai and Palani, as an overnight train should be carried out at the earliest. Departure from Coimbatore should be at 11.30 PM.
- The early morning passenger train service departing from Dindigul to Coimbatore via Palani should be restored. This train can be a MEMU service with two departures at Coimbatore at 9.15 AM and 6.30 PM.
- The successful weekly train from Tirunelveli to Mettupalayam via Tenkasi and Coimbatore should be regularised with an increase in the frequency of the train service. Departure from Coimbatore to Madurai at 8.30 PM.
The railway enthusiast team members also explained to the Madurai DRM that all of the above demands were also presented to the Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw by their elected representatives, along with letters of support from 190 associations from Coimbatore district, 20 Grama Panchayat resolutions and over 2,000 signatures in an online petition.
