The woman was reportedly abducted when she was shopping, by two men Shanmugasundar and his friend Vijayakumar who had arrived in an Omni van.
Coimbatore: Shanmugasundaram (38) hails from Annur Masakaguntanur, Coimbatore district. He was reportedly in love with a 27-year-old woman who lived near his home and had been trying to persuade the woman to marry him. But the woman had clearly told Shanmugasundaram to talk to her parents.
Shanmugasundaram reportedly went to the woman's family and asked for her hand in marriage. But the woman's parents did not agree and had warned Shanmugasundaram not to harass her anymore. An enraged Shanmugasundaram thereafter reportedly went around the entire village where he lived and announced that he would commit suicide if he did not get to marry the woman he loved.
On Sunday night, when the woman had gone shopping at a grocery store, Shanmugasundaram reportedly arrived at the store with his friend Vijayakumar in an Omni van and abducted the woman to forcibly marry him. The woman escaped from the car and lodged a complaint at the Annur police station.
Based on the complaint, the police registered a case under five divisions after further investigating the abduction. Shanmugasundaram and his friend Vijayakumar were produced in court and arrested.
