Coimbatore Criminal Court has allowed the CBCID police to detain and interrogate five people, including a doctor, from Coimbatore Ellen Hospital for five days in connection with the death of Dr Uma Shankar (Chennai Hospitals).
Coimbatore: Judge allowed CBCID to remand five people in custody, including the director of the Coimbatore Ellen Hospital.
Coimbatore Gandhipuram Ellen Hospital was leased by its owner Ramachandran to a Chennai-based doctor Umashankar on a contract basis. In this situation, the hospital premises were allegedly seized by Ramachandran’s supporters, entered the hospital, forcibly evicted the patients and staff, and ransacked the hospital without notice.
He is also alleged to have lodged a false complaint against Dr Uma Shankar of Chennai Hospitals at the Rathinapuri Police Station alleging that his hospital had been illegally occupied. A case was registered against Dr. Uma Shankar in the complaint. Meanwhile, Dr Uma Shankar was killed in an accident in Coimbatore. This has raised several suspicions and the family of the doctor have alleged foul play.
In this situation, the case filed at the Rathinapuri police station was transferred to the CBCID. The CBCID police who investigated the case revealed that Ramachandran had lodged a false complaint at the Rathinapuri police station and a case had been registered against him based on that false complaint.
Following this, the CBCID police booked Ramachandran, the Managing Director of Ellen Hospital, and Kamaraj, Murthy, Murugesan, and Palanichamy for giving false information.
The petition filed by the CBCID to take all the five into custody came up for hearing in the Criminal Court today. Five people, including Ramachandran, were brought to the Coimbatore Criminal Court.
The CBCID saught 5 days to interrogate the 5 accused. Judge Sanjeevi Bhaskar allowed only five days for the said interrogation. He also allowed them to meet with their lawyers for half an hour every evening.
Judge Sanjeevi Bhaskar also ordered that the five be given proper medical care. Meanwhile, a hearing was held today based on the petition filed by the 5 persons seeking bail. The judge adjourned the hearing on the bail petition till the 20th.
