Bear attacks 64-year-old cook at The Anaimalai Club in Valparai at midnight.
Coimbatore: There has been a heightened movement of bears in the last few months in the estates surrounding Valparai in Coimbatore district causing a sense of panic among locals and tea estate workers.
The Anaimalai Club is located at a tea estate in the Lower Paralai Estate area near Valparai. Xavier (64) who works as a cook at the estate here had finished cooking around midnight and went to the gate to close it. A bear wandering around the area charged at Xavier and attacked him. It is reported that Xavier was seriously injured having been bitten on his right hand. Those who worked at the estate noticed the attack and chased the bear. They rescued him and immediately admitted him to the Valparai Hospital for treatment.

Xavier was given first-aid and given Rs. 5,000 by Valparai Forest Ranger Venkatesh, and later sent to the Pollachi Government Hospital for further treatment. The public has demanded forest officials drive the bears back into the dense forest.
