A science quiz was conducted at the ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute on June 8 as part of the 'Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav' celebrations to commemorate 75 years of Indian Independence.
Coimbatore: To commemorate 75 years of Indian Independence, a Science Quiz competition for college students was held on June 8, at the ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute in Coimbatore.

About 50 students from reputed colleges, including Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, VIT School of Biosciences and Technology, Vellore, Mar Athanasios College of Advanced Studies, Thiruvalla, Kerala, Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Studies for Women, Coimbatore, Karunya Institute of Technology and Science, Coimbatore and the Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences, Allahabad participated in the competition.
The competition was conducted by Quiz Master D Puthira Prathap, Principal Scientist of the Institute. Five teams, known as Janaki Ammal, C A Barber, T S Venkataraman, N E Borlaug and M S Swaminathan were formed. The quiz comprised five general rounds, followed by a visual round and a buzzer round.

Most of the questions were answered by the teams enthusiastically. At the end of the competition, team Janaki Ammal bagged the first place with 65 points, closely followed by teams N E Borlaug with 60 points, M S Swaminathan with 55 points, T S Venkataraman with 50 points and C A Barber with 20 points. Certificates of appreciation and gifts were awarded to the winning team. Members of the audience who answered questions that were passed by participants also received gifts.
Earlier, while inaugurating the quiz, G Hema Prabha, the Director of ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute mentioned that this quiz competition was the first of its kind to be organized in the Institute. The observers for the quiz competition included R Viswanathan, Head, Division of Crop Protection, C Palaniswami, Head, Division of Crop Production, A Ramesh Sundar, Principal Scientist and H K Mahadevaswamy, Scientist.
A Vennila, Principal Scientist, K Mohanraj, Senior Scientist and V Krishnapriya, Scientist served as scorers for the quiz program.
