Coimbatore: As the tragic events of losing money and losing your life due to online rummy games in Tamil Nadu continue to take place, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has said that an emergency law will be passed soon to ban it.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Stalin has issued an action order to form a panel headed by retired Chennai High Court Judge Chandru to file a report with full data to enact this emergency law.
"As the number of people using internet services is multiplying day by day, so is the number of people playing online rummy.
During the previous regime, a law was passed on 25-2-2021 against online rummy. The bench comprising the Chief Justice of the Chennai High Court, which heard petitions filed by some companies seeking repeal of the Act, quashed the judgment on 3-8-2021 stating that the Act had been enacted without sufficient cause and evidence.
Further, when the Chennai High Court dismissed the Act, it had opined that it had failed to explain the scientific data for the passage of the Act. The appeal filed by the Government of Tamil Nadu on 13-11-2021 in the Supreme Court against this judgment of the Chennai High Court has not yet been taken up for hearing.
Also, laws against online rummy in states like Kerala and Karnataka have been repealed by the respective state high courts. In this situation, the tragic events of being inspired by the online rummy game and losing money in it are taking place continuously. A consultative meeting chaired by the Chief Minister was held at the General Secretariat yesterday on the steps to be taken in this regard.
It has the potential for great risk, including financial loss and suicide caused by online rummy games. To investigate the possible effects of these games with relevant data, led by Retired Chennai High Court Judge K.S. Chandru, it was decided that a panel would be formed comprising IIT technician Sankararaman, Sneha Organization’s founder and psychologist Lakshmi Vijayakumar, and Additional Director of Police Vinith Dev Wankade.
Considering the need to find an immediate solution to this problem on the basis of the report of the committee mentioned above, the Emergency Act will be enacted soon. This will set a precedent for other states to follow. " Was mentioned.
