Foundry Development Foundation’s Centre of Excellence construction begins at CODISSIA Industrial Park, Coimbatore

Considering the importance of the growth of the Foundry sector which is called the mother of all industries, the Foundries Development Foundation (FDF) has signed a joint venture with Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) to establish the 'Centre of Excellence at the cost of Rs 32 crores in the premises of 'CODISSIA' Industrial Park Limited, Moperipalayam. Marking this event, a Bhumi Pooja was performed today.

Coimbatore: Castings is one of the main raw materials used in almost all types of product manufacturing. Overall, the Industry sector’s growth is determined by the performance of the Foundry sector. This is the reason why the Foundry sector is referred to as the mother of all industries.

The Industrial City - Coimbatore is known for its casting and manufacturing industries both nationally and globally. There are over 600 foundries established across the district among which, 400 foundries belong to the MSME sector.

The Foundry Industry is a core industrial sector, upon which 75% of Coimbatore’s GDP is dependent on, either directly or indirectly. In the past few years, demands placed on the Foundry Industry have evolved in order to meet the emerging Quality & Quantity needs, apart from increased strength to weight ratio, and closer dimensional tolerances. This calls for developing more advanced methods and for people to understand and manufacture metal castings to suit these needs.

A few eminent Industrialists, Chaired by Late C.R.Swaminathan (CRS), in Coimbatore envisaged the need for an exclusive Skill Development and Process Excellence Centre for Foundry Sector. Thus the Foundries Development Foundation (FDF), a Section 8, non-profit organization was established in Coimbatore.

Since its inception, the FDF has been working on a few critical areas, to elevate the performance of Coimbatore Engineering Industries to meet Global standards. Today the FDF has 3 verticals - Material Exchange, Centre of Excellence, and Exhibition & Conferences, each focused on different ways of optimizing Foundry Processes and Outputs.

The FDF Material Sourcing (FMS) is a platform to bring together Foundry Needs and Supplier Capabilities. So far, about Rs 150Cr+ transactions have been carried out through the FMS, resulting in considerable savings to both Foundries and Suppliers.

The FDF Centre of Excellence (FDF COE) envisaged creating a Hands-on Skill Development course for Metallurgically Sound Castings. The FDF COE will be established at a cost of Rs 32Crs at the CODISSIA INDUSTRIAL PARK, Moperipalayam.

This is a JV project with TIDCO as the partner and with the Contribution from the Members of many Coimbatore Foundries and User Industries. The FDF COE will house a Modern Foundry Complex with inbuilt Casting Manufacturing Processes to provide the required Hands-on Skills of Foundry Technicians and Engineers, apart from being an extended arm for the Manufacturing Sector to develop Metal Castings. The FDF COE shall consist of both Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Casting Development and Manufacturing.

Today the Bhoomi Pooja of FDF Centre of Excellence (FDF COE) was performed at Codissia Industrial Park, Moperipalayam. Many prominent industrialists graced the occasion.
