Female employee succumbs to burn injuries in alleged self-immolation bid despite medical treatment at CMCH
Coimbatore: In a sudden twist in the case of the 37-year-old woman who allegedly set herself on fire in Coimbatore at her employer's residence, the woman confessed before her untimely tragic death that her employer and his wife had poured petrol on her and set her on fire. Relatives of the woman are protesting, saying that they will not receive the victim's body until the perpetrators are arrested.
A 37-year-old woman from Bhavani in Erode district had been estranged from her husband for 10 years due to various disagreements. The woman who worked at the Vinayaka Ceramics store in Bhavani was rescued last Sunday with burn injuries from the bathroom of the store owner's house in the RS Puram area of Coimbatore, and was admitted to the Coimbatore Government Hospital for treatment after the employer had reported that it was a self-immolation bid.
Following this, the police registered a case of suicide and were investigating the incident. Recently a tape that the said woman had previously recorded has surfaced. In it, she claims that she had been repeatedly sexually harassed by the store owner and was forced to have six abortions and that the store owner and his wife had threatened to set her on fire to kill her. The woman had also penned a letter addressed to the Coimbatore police regarding the above. Subsequently, after the police obtained the relevant evidence, they interrogated the woman at the hospital who stated that the store owner and his wife had poured petrol on her and stated that she was ruining their family. They had allegedly set her on fire thereafter and pushed her into their bathroom.
Following this, the police registered a case on the grounds of an attempt to murder. As the police were investigating the sudden turn of events, the woman tragically succumbed to her burn injuries despite receiving intensive care at the Coimbatore Government Hospital.
Following her death, the case was re-registered yet again as a murder case against the prime suspects – the store owner Navaneeth and his wife Akila who have absconded. The Coimbatore Municipal Police have set up three separate task forces to capture the suspects.
Meanwhile, the relatives of the woman are protesting and refusing to collect her body until the culprits have been caught. The mother of the victim claims that her daughter did not resort to suicide and that she was repeatedly summoned on Saturday by the owner’s wife Akila under the claims that she was unwell. She stated that adhering to Akila's beck and call always, the victim had shown up at her employer's place following which the unfortunate incident took place.
