700 cusecs of water released from Udumalai Amaravathi Dam for irrigation

700 cusecs of water has been released from Udumalai Amaravathi dam in Tirupur through sluices and 400 cusecs through the main canal. This will irrigate 41,117 acres of cultivable land in Tirupur and Karur.


Tirupur: 700 cusecs of water has been released from Amaravathi Dam near Udumalpet in Tirupur district for irrigation purposes.

54,637 acres of land in Tirupur and Karur districts are being irrigated by the Amaravathi Dam near Udumalpet. 2,661 million cubic feet of water was released to 25,250 acres of land in Udumalai, Madathukulam and Dharapuram areas and the irrigation period was completed on Tuesday.

In this situation, the old and new ayacut irrigated farmers have demanded that additional water should be supplied so that the crops including paddy, sugarcane and coconut cultivated in the old and new ayacut irrigated lands can be benefited.



The water from the Amaravathi Dam has been released as the Tamil Nadu Government has extended the irrigation period and ordered the release of water till May 28. With the release of water, 47,117 irrigated lands in Tirupur, Karur district will be irrigated.



The Amaravathi Dam has a water stock of 71.10 feet against the total capacity of 90 feet.



While the present inflow to the dam is 117 cusecs, 300 cusecs of water has been released through sluices for the old ayacut irrigation and 400 cusecs through the main canal for new ayacut irrigation.
