The much maligned rapists deserve severe punishment including death by hanging; their crime is heinous and abominable. The media cries hoarse demanding that they be hanged. The learned members on the TV panels advance multiple reasons for the recurring reports of rape and how to tackle them. God, what kind of demons are they if they molest, torture and kill innocent girls aged eight, eleven and twelve; they are not girls, they are children. The whole nation is outraged, but reports of rape keep coming from all parts of India. The government and responsible social organizations are baffled how to tackle the problem.

We are also baffled at the promiscuity and libido of the Indian teenagers. The young man feels he is entitled to possess a girl because he is a male. The old and not-so-old have also the same mind set. The films in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu etc have taught him that girls are waiting to be loved, and if they don’t reciprocate, raped.
How dare a girl disrespect a male when he gives her the honor of loving her; his mother had pampered him with extra love and extra helpings of precious food telling him that he is unique and that she is proud of him. If he had been born a girl, his father would have kicked her out. Actually he saved his mother; he was already a hero. His sisters are neglected and treated casually because they are girls. To be born a girl is bad luck; those who are not blessed by God are born as girls. There is nothing wrong in molesting a girl who is after all an unwanted human being. With this misinformation filling his head, can you find fault with him if he goes out and rapes the first girl he meets?
He feeds on films and spends precious money on cinemas, next to liquor. He adores the film hero who looks ragged, unkempt, unshaved, clad in a lungi and smoking a beedi. Most probably he will not be allowed into a decent house. But beautiful girls on the screen swoon over him. They admire his bad manners, dirty appearance, lack of personal hygiene and his audacity to invite trouble particularly with the cops. Even when he expressly rejects girls, they fall on him and beg him to love them and take them. Our teenage fan swallows all this nonsense, and believes that girls around are waiting to fall in love with him and itching to go to bed with him.
This frame of mind has been fostered by our films, books, dramas, songs, our parents and society in general. Let us talk to the young man:
“Hey young man, why are you chasing that girl? She seems to reject you.”
“You don’t understand female psychology. When they say no, it means yes.”
“Who told you that? You mean she will say yes if she does not like you?”
“Don’t ask irritating questions. When I chase her and make her realize that she cannot escape me, she will surrender. She will know that I am masculine. Wait and see.”
“If she stops running and accepts you, will you marry her?”
“Don’t talk nonsense. Nobody buys a cow to drink a cup of milk.”
“My God! What if she comes to really love you?”
“ I will sleep with her, prove her I am a man, and leave her.”
“If she offers resistance?”
“It has to be rape. Let me tell you girls enjoy violence, sexual violence.”
“Where did you pick up all this gutter ideas? Don’t you know your sister may also be treated like this?”
He grits his teeth and swears vengeance on the imagined lover of his sister.
Do you suppose that in the land of Kama Sutra, our men are charged with more libido than those in the other countries? The films and songs prepare them to assume that there are willing shameless women, but the society disapproves the girls displaying their love? It is lust on the part of men and they find there are no legal provision to channel it. Do you think our young men are condemned for the same things that a western teenager is allowed to do in the name of dating? Do you accept that our wise forefathers advocated child marriage anticipating these types of sex violations? Do you think that in the old days the deva dasi system was established to help men to work off their sexual energy sparing the decent women?
What about the murders that accompany rapes? Why the human beasts violate small female children and then kill them? Do we have any social provisions to educate the young and old sex offenders / rapists so they would be ashamed of their own actions? Do you think we could follow the European plan of licensing brothels in our cities so the incidence of rape would come down? In France they say sexual offences came down drastically when brothels were licensed in Paris after World War Two?
Do you suppose death by hanging would discourage these rapists who have been groomed by the society all along? Will the recent ordinance of death by hanging for rapists will deter the goons and scoundrels in the small towns and villages of UP, MP, Bihar, Rajasthan etc who never go to school, never read the newspapers and are fed on the idea that women are for the enjoyment of men?
When rape cases are pending on our MPs and MLAs in many northern and southern states, do the assemblies and the parliament have any moral standing to enact laws to punish rapists? When courts try to legalise rapes by allowing the rapists to marry the victims and to escape punishment, how can we ensure safety for women from the rapists?
When our Guru Devs, Swamis, Asarams, Nithyanandas and a host of other holy men who consort with the politicians and VIPs and who rape a girl or two on the sidelines, we find the total government machinery geared up to shield them and defend them. When parents of a victim go to file a complaint in the police station, they are shooed out; they are told that the girl is equally responsible for the rape. Often the policemen come forward to broker peace between the two and settle the issue with a commission for themselves. Sometimes the victims are assumed to be women of loose morals and the policemen try to take advantage of them. Only when the media, ever hungry for sensation, takes up the case, all the politicians, officials and others assume moral roles and condemn the rapists though there are Chief Ministers who call this an insignificant matter and exhort the people to forget these silly issues and concentrate on the development of the country.
In a land where the Ministers have abandoned their wives, and where many Chief Ministers have a couple of wives as status symbols, where is the much needed respect for women? Why should the rapists fear the law, even the death by hanging, when so many rape cases involving MPs and Ministers are pending for almost decades?
Rapists, we condemn you to death by hanging though your mother, your epics, your gods, your films, your books, your society and your rulers have always groomed you for that act, would condone it if you are a god man or a VIP, would hide it if higher police officers are your friends or in your pay, and are indirectly responsible for your heinous act.
May God curse you and condemn you to eternal damnation.
