Delta will automatically check in passengers with its mobile app

Delta just did away with the standard, antiquated flight check-in process that’s plagued modern flyers for years. Now, Delta passengers’ boarding passes will automatically be sent out 24 hours prior to a flight, so long as they use Delta’s mobile app. The change was noted in the iOS version of the Fly Delta app, and it’s sure to be a welcome one to those who hate having to go through the cumbersome online process. The Android app doesn’t yet appear to have the option.

This is notable because no other US airline offers this service, and it should hopefully inspire others to follow suit. German airline Lufthansa does automatic check-in, and JetBlue briefly tried a pilot program with select customers of its Even More Space pricing tier back in 2014. But this is the first official automatic check-in service for a US airline that looks like it’s here to stay.

It’s unclear how Delta plans on handling the other aspects of the process as it was typically handled on the web, including bag check and seat changes. It also looks like if you don’t have the Fly Delta app, you might not be emailed your boarding pass and you may still have to follow the standard check-in process online. We’ve reached out to Delta for more clarification on those fronts and we’ll update the story when we hear back.
