ISRO's Venus mission only after 2020

Venus, second in order from the Sun, is nearly 162 million miles away from Earth while Jupiter, which lies between Mars and Saturn, is nearly 610 million miles away from Earth.

The Indian Space Research Organisation is now planning a mission to Venus. ISRO has invited scientists to suggest studies for a potential orbiter mission to Venus.

The ISRO will send a spacecraft which will go around the Venus in an elliptical orbit before getting closer to the planet.

The spacecraft will also carry a set of instruments weighing 175 kg and using 500W of power. The scientific community has been given a month's time to suggest space-based studies by May 19. According to a senior ISRO official,''The formal mission on Venus may not happen before 2020 since the study need to be finalised, a project report need to be presented and approved by the government." The ISRO in the past has also sent an orbiter to the Moon in 2008 which was delivering data until three months before its estimated life span came to an end. The ISRO had also successfully conducted a mission to Mars in 2013. It was India's second planetary mission and was of Rs 450 crore project. Venus, second in order from the Sun, is nearly 162 million miles away from Earth while Jupiter, which lies between Mars and Saturn, is nearly 610 million miles away from Earth.

Chandrayaan 2 is expected to be launched next year.
