Coimbatore: Last April, the Tamil Nadu government announced a property tax hike for all corporations, municipalities, and municipalities in the state. This was strongly opposed by various political parties.
It has been announced that the public will have until the 13th of this month to comment on the property tax hike. Given this context, the Marxist Communist Party (CPM) is campaigning against the increase in property tax by the State of Tamil Nadu and petitioning the Coimbatore Corporation, the Municipal Corporation, and all areas not to raise property taxes.
As part of the above-stated initiative, more than 70 members of the Marxist Communist Party led by Padmanabhan, a member of the state leadership of the Marxist Communist Party, visited the corporation office today.
Subsequently, each of them submitted their petitions to the Assistant Commissioner of Revenue, Senthilkumar Ratnam.
Councilor Ramamurthy said, “The corporation has decided to increase the property tax hike and it will be somewhere between 15 per to 150 per cent at the council meeting held on the 11th. In our opinion, there is no need for an immediate property tax hike, just two months after the election, in an environment where people have been affected by the coronavirus, due to which 6-year local elections have not taken place.
We said that the tax hike should be within 15 per cent in the event of unavoidable circumstances. The Central Government should be involved in this matter. But the property tax has been raised as per the guidelines of the central government.
It has been dictatorially declared that the only way to get federal funding is to raise property taxes. This is the right of the local council. People will not be able to sustain the extent of the tax raise. Therefore, we have filed a petition protesting against this.”
He added that he hoped the decision taken at the forthcoming Finance Committee meeting would be in favor of the people.
More than 70 Coimbatore ward members, including Boopathi, Kannaki and Sumathi, took part in the protest.
