The Selvapuram police have registered a case and launched an investigation after a DMK functionary who consumed alcohol died, while a friend who consumed alcohol with him is under treatment and losing his eyesight.
Coimbatore: Two DMK functionaries who consumed alcohol purchased from the black market in Coimbatore have suffered grievous after-effects after consumption. While one of the functionaries succumbed, the other lost his eyesight.
Shanmugam (53), a native of Telungupalayam near Perur in Coimbatore and DMK Deputy Secretary in the area, and Shiva, his friend, the Ward Secretary of the area had gone to a liquor shop in the same locality for a drink on Tuesday afternoon. Since shop No.1680 was not opened, the duo bought liquor in a black market in a nearby bar and mixed it with water, and stored it in a can.
Shortly after consuming the liquor, both DMK functionaries reportedly vomited and fainted. Shocked at seeing them fall, neighbours rushed to the duo and immediately took them to a Government Hospital for treatment. Doctors declared Shanmugam brought dead. Shiva, who was reportedly brought in a critical condition is undergoing intensive treatment after his eyesight began to fail.
