The lone elephant strolled into a residential area in Arul Jyothi Nagar in Muthipalayam near Thondamuthur in Coimbatore and damaged one of the houses when the public tried to chase the animal away.
Coimbatore: A lone elephant strolled into a residential area near Thondamuthur in Coimbatore, leaving residents completely panic-stricken.
Arul Jyothi Nagar in Muthipalayam, near Thondamuthur in Coimbatore, is a residential area comprising almost 500 houses. At around 12 midnight, a lone wild elephant reportedly entered the neighbourhood.
Residents were alerted to the presence of the lone elephant since dogs began barking in the neighbourhood and tried to chase the pachyderm by themselves.
The elephant however did not leave the place for over an hour and knocked down the house compound wall of a resident, Kausalya. The elephant then entered a nearby coconut grove and disappeared.
With the onset of summer, wild animals have begun to leave secluded forest regions and entering residential areas. The Forest Department has advised the public to stay alert, especially at night.
