The auto rickshaw drivers of CITU Tamil Nadu Auto-rickshaw Workers Union staged the protest at the North Transport Office.
Coimbatore: CITU auto drivers were arrested for storming the North Transport Office in Coimbatore and demanding stoppage of online imposition of fines.
Workers' Welfare Associations across the country have been holding a series of protests against the Central Government's restructuring of transport laws in the past few months.
As part of this, the Tamil Nadu Auto Workers Union of CITU gheraoed the North Regional Transport Office on Balasundaram Road in Coimbatore and staged a protest on Monday.
During the protest, auto drivers stated that even if they indulged in minor traffic violations, they were fined thousands of rupees online. A 100-fold hike has been implemented from Rs.650 to Rs.5,000 for FC Celan. The agitators stated that the sector has been hugely affected since the fine has been increased from Rs.50 for 10 days to Rs.50 per day, in case of delay in FC.
More than 80 auto drivers who were protesting were arrested by the city police.
