The Tamizhaga Valvurimai Pathukappu Makkal Katchi staged a protest on behalf of Tamil Nadu Vannar Peravai demanding that caste certificate for them be issued as 'Hindu Vannar' instead of 'Hindu Vannar Washermen.'
Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Vannar Peravai staged a protest at the South Tahsildar's office in Coimbatore demanding that their caste certificates be issued as just 'Hindu Vannar' and not 'Hindu Vannar Washermen.'

The Tamizhaga Valvurimai Pathukappu Makkal Katchi staged a protest on behalf of Tamil Nadu Vannar Peravai demanding an alteration in the caste certificates being issued to them. They demanded that the 'Hindu Vannar Washerman' caste certificate which is being issued to the Vannar community focusing on the profession of washermen, be changed into just 'Hindu Vannar.'

The protest was led by Mani Baba, President of the Tamil Nadu Vannar Peravai, while the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam General Secretary K Ramakrishnan attended the demonstration and delivered the keynote address.
Ramakrishnan stated that while the caste certificates issued to other communities mention just the name of their caste, the Vannar's profession is being specified in their caste certificates. Calling this unfair since the people belonging to the group are now well-educated and in respectable professions, Ramakrishnan urged the Tamil Nadu Government to take immediate action and avoid mentioning their profession in the caste certificates.

Slogans were raised during the protest and copies of their caste certificates were torn. The agitators resorted to a road roko suddenly causing commotion. However, the police officers intervened at the spot to mediate and disperse the protesters.
