Police fail to submit evidence; Goondas Act repealed from Coimbatore Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha functionary

The Goondas Act imposed on a Akhil Bharatha Hindu Mahasabha functionary has been repealed as the documents related to the Goondas Act against him were not submitted to the accused by senior officials within the stipulated time.

Coimbatore: The Goondas Act imposed on a Akhil Bharatha Hindu Mahasabha functionary in Coimbatore has been revoked as the relevant documents were not submitted to the senior govt officials and the accused.

Prem alias Boxer Prem is the convenor of the regional youth wing of the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha. Prem protested against the vandalisation of temples in Bangladesh, in November last year, for which the Race Course police arrested him. Prem was arrested for reasons allegedly trying to disturb public peace inducing a religious clash. But Prem was released on bail in a few days.

Last month, Boxer Prem was once again arrested and jailed, stating he has een booked under Goondas for the arrest in November, the police said. Documents in this regard were also sent to the higher officials of the government on behalf of the Coimbatore city police.

However, the Additional Chief Secretary analysed the documents and declared that the Goondas Act was promulgated on November 18, 2021 on behalf of the Coimbatore city police and the documents were kept in abeyance for 12 days without sending them to Prem or other government officials till November 29.

Following this, the Additional Chief Secretary ordered the repeal of the Goondas Act registered against Prem by the Coimbatore police under the rule that if the Goondas Act is kept unsolicited for more than 12 days, it will lapse and that the arrest of Prem, three months after the order of the Goondas Act, was not a proper action.
