Meena Logu, the President of Central Zone has alleged that the politics within the Tamil Nadu Water Drainage board is the prime reason behind interrupted water supply in the city and has demanded that action has to be taken to meet the pleas of public including uniform water supply, repair of dilapidated roads, sewer and rain drain cleaning.
Coimbatore: Meena Logu, DMK, the Central Zone President has quoted that the existing seniority issues among the TWAD employees, the politics between them is the main reason for uneven water supply in Coimbatore.
Meena Logu, Central Zonal president of the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation was also part of the first council meeting held in Coimbatore. The item 4 of the resolution passed in the meeting stated that funds of Rs 4.37 crores have been sanctioned to renovate the roads under Ward Nos. 86, 87 and 88 of South Zone that were opened for laying drinking water pipelines and sewer pipelines.
The major issues in South Zone, which is her region, are the drinking water, sewer and rainwater drain desilting. The desilting of sewage and rain water drain is the immediate issue that needs attention, as even scanty rainfall results in flooding on the roads, also hiking the infection spread. She alleged that the number of sanitation workers available in the area are half of the totally required number. Only 25 workers are available in place of 50 workers, they available workers do not work during their working hours.
"There is a condition that permanent employees have to work from 5:45 am to 10:45 pm and contractual employees have to work from 7 am to 12 noon. But, the workers do not work during their stipulated time, resulting in health threats'' . She stated that the need for additional workers will diminish if the present lot works on time, and there is no possibility of appointing additional sanitation workers in the corporation at present. She also alleged that even the basic materials required to carry out the cleanliness work have not been supplied from the corporation.
Meena further stated that a zone-wise estimate of Rs 5 lakh should be made and funds should be allocated for carrying out health works. Subsequently, drinking water is supplied to the southern zone areas once in 21 days, which should at least be changed to five days a week.
"There is a seniority tag hanging in the water supply. The areas under the control of senior engineers get water at 4-5 days interval while the distribution is once in 15-20 days in the junior engineer's water distribution areas," he said. Therefore, there should be regular water supply in all the wards immediately".
She also said that the main roads should be repaired first and roads in wards 32, 46, 47, 83 and 63 should be repaired on a war footing.
