Ambulance topples near Coimbatore; newborn and driver dead

An ambulance carrying a newborn was enroute from Udumalpet to Coimbatore government hospital. While the ambulance arrived near Malumichampatti, here the ambulance reportedly lost control and toppled.



Coimbatore: In a tragic accident, the driver of an ambulance and a newborn in the ambulance were killed when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle near Malumichampatti in Coimbatore. 

Ramya, the wife of Sivasankaran (26), a native of Udumalpet had given birth to a male child at a private hospital in Udumalpet, in Tirupur, on the morning of April 12. Since the newborn was suffering from shortness of breath, the doctors recommended that the child be shifted to the Coimbatore Government Hospital for further treatment.

Sivasankaran, his relatives Palanisamy, Shakuntala, Valli and a nurse from the private hospital were travelling to Coimbatore via Pollachi in an ambulance, driven by Raveendran. 



In a tragic turn of events, the ambulance driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle as it was nearing Malumichampatti and crashed into a roadside barricade resulting in the ambulance overturning on the road. 



The ambulance driver Raveendran and the newborn tragically died on the spot.

Palaniswami and Valli who were seriously injured were immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital for treatment. Shakuntala who sustained head injuries has been shifted to the Coimbatore Government Hospital.

Madukkarai police who reached the spot recovered the bodies and had them sent to the Coimbatore Government Hospital for autopsy. 



The police also cleared the overturned ambulance from the road using a poclain machine. Investigations are underway regarding the accident.
