Annur Ward No.12 Councillor, Ranganathan stated that he would award a free trip to Ooty for 50 residents who segregate waste at source from April 14 to June 1.
Coimbatore: In a novel bid to inculcate civic responsibility among residents in Ward No.12, the Annur Councillor ofWard No.12, Ranganathan announced that he would award a free trip to Ooty to 50 residents who segregate household waste at source.
He announced that the household garbage had to be segregated as bio-degradable and non-biodegradable to those collecting garbage from homes. Ranganathan has been creating awareness among the residents in his Ward about proper disposal of garbage, in an aim to keep the ward clean and hygienic.
The announcement has been received well by the people from his Ward. Starting April 14 (Tamil New Year's Day) to June 1, if the residents segregate the garbage collected in their homes into biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste and then hand itover to the sanitation workers properly, 50 people will be selected from the Wward through draw of lots and win a free trip to Ooty on June 5 (World Environment Day). Expenses such as food and transportation will also be taken care of as per the notice on local WhatsApp groups regarding the free trip offer to Ooty.
Cooking waste, perishable fruits and leftover food items should be disposed of through biodegradable garbage bags, and plastic papers, tea cups, plastic bottles, broken glassware etc. in non-biodegradable bags.
The novel initiative of the Annur Councillor is being lauded from various quarters with public themselves coming forward to provide financial assistance. "A total of 500 families reside in our Ward. Generally, garbage is not disposed of properly and dumped everywhere, thereby leading to health hazards. The tour announcement scheme has been launched in an attempt to make it a practice among people to segregate garbage properly in their homes," reiterated Ranganathan.
He also visited the grading centres set up in Chennai and Coimbatore to see how garbage is being converted into compost. "On World Environment Day (June 5), there will be no garbage lying anywhere in our Ward, especially in public places," concluded the confident Annur Councillor.
