Coimbatore: The Marxist Communist party submitted petition to the Corporation Commissioner for reconsideration of the property tax hike.

The petition read that the Government of Tamil Nadu has issued GO to increase the property tax for local bodies as per the guidelines of the Union Government. No conditions should be imposed by the Union Government in such a way as to take away the rights of the State Government and local bodies while allocating funds for schemes to the States. But the actions of the present Union Government and accordingly the Government order of the State Government completely breached the rights, which the party condemned in the petition. They urged the local bodies to reconsider the unfair tax hike.
For a long time, it is the local bodies that decide the property tax. There is a vast difference between the value of commercial establishments and residents in Chennai and the other places of Tamil Nadu. The existing value and business vary greatly.
"In fact, there are plenty of residential and commercial areas with no basic amenities. There can be no comparison between the developed and the underdeveloped areas. The increase in taxes, from 25 percent to 150 percent, will be a huge burden not just now, but also on the apartments that are currently being constructed."
Due to the economic policies of the union government, the increase in the prices of all petroleum products and the unemployment caused by the pandemic has affected the people. More than 50 percent of the labourers in Tamil Nadu's suburbs live in rented houses. Stating that this tax hike will affect them immediately, the CPI(M) requested that the decision be reconsidered.
