The Race Course Police in Coimbatore arrested two persons who cheated a woman of Rs. 10 lakhs by promising to help her get a loan of Rs. 1 crore.

Coimbatore: Two middle-aged real estate businessmen were arrested by the Race Course Police in Coimbatore for defrauding a woman of Rs.25 laks on the pretext of getting her a loan of Rs.1 crore.

Sridevi, a native of Chithode in Erode district who is a vendor of dry fruits was in need of a loan of Rs. 1 crore for developing her business. She reportedly received a text message one day stating that Rs. 1 crore loan will be offered to her, on a commission basis. When she contacted the number, Gautham, a native of Coimbatore spoke to her and promised that he would arrange the money, if he was given a commission of Rs. 25 lakhs.

Trusting Gautham, Sridevi sent her son Ramana with Rs.10 lakh to meet Gautham near Bishop Appasamy College on Race Course Road in Coimbatore. Two men, including Gautham, reportedly handed Ramana a cardboard box stating that the loan of Rs. 1 crore was in the box and fled the spot after taking Rs.10 lakhs from Ramana. Suspicious of their behaviour, Ramana checked the box only to find plastic items and toothbrushes. He lodged a complaint immediately at the Race Course police station since he was unable to chase the fraudsters to recover the money.

Following this, the police registered a case and conducted an investigation. The two men were found and arrested, and Rs. 6 lakh was seized from them. Investigations also revealed that they had false identities. Gautham was actually identified as Janagan (42) of Sundarapuram while the other man was Martin Amalraj (42) of Chettipalayam. The two men were produced before a court and sent to jail, and will be firther investigated.

Ramana had alleged that he had been cheated of Rs. 25 lakh in the police complaint, but it was discovered that only Rs. 10 lakh was in the bag given by his mother. It is also learned that Janakan and Martin who are in the real estate business used the money they had cheated Sridevi of, to pay off their debts and had been drinking with their friends.
