Bhavani Sagar, one of the most important earthen dams built in the world in 1955. The lower Bhavani irrigation channel from this dam is a major source water of the western region. The percolation water of Lower Bhavani irrigation is an alternative source of water from the ground water contaminated due to SIPCOT Perundurai. However, the lower Bhavani Irrigation Canal Protection System said that the expansion, renovation and modernization of the irrigated area would lead to destruction of the irrigation area.
It is the direct source of water for areas including Erode, Tirupur and Karur districts, especially Kangayam, Chennimalai, Nambiyur, Perundurai, Gobichettipalayam, Kunnathur, Uthukuli, Vellakovil, Sivagiri, Kodumudi etc., municipalities besides also being direct source of drinking water for more than 300 small and marginal villages and provides drinking water to more than 30 lakh people through ponds, ponds, tanks, check dams, borewells and open wells.
Thousands of acres of agricultural land are irrigated and cultivated through Odathuraikulam, Ananda Sagar Lake, Korankan Pallavadai and 34 percolation water schemes. Moreover, ground water recharge will be completely eliminated in all the three districts. The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has promised to increase the forest cover of Tamil Nadu, which is 24 per cent to 33 per cent by 2030.
