Coimbatore: Arappor Iyakkam, a Chennai-based non-governmental organisation working towards anti-corruption and well known for bringing to light various corruption, especially in Coimbatore and Chennai Corporations has announced to set-up district wise committees across Tamil Nadu.

In a first, the NGO will launch its first district wise committee in Coimbatore, on April 3, said Jayaram Venkatesan, the Convenor of Arappor Iyakkam

"We have unearthed various scams including the series of corruption committed by former AIADMK Minister S.P. Velumani in Coimbatore and Chennai Corporations. Often, scams in bigger cities are spoken at large but corruption doesn't prevail only in bigger cities. Daily life of people living in suburbs are largely affected due to both micro and macro scams", he said.

Briefing on the purpose of a district-wise committee, he added that the committee will largely focus on taking steps to expose corruption in the suburbs too, instead of just focussing on the Corporations of major cities like Coimbatore and Chennai.

"In bid to bring to light all forms of corruption affecting people's daily life like storm water drains, garbage disposal, among others, Arappor Iyakkam intends to form committees at district levels to more keenly monitor scams", said Jayaram Venkatesan, Convenor of Arappor Iyakkam.

"We are also planning to engage in various activities including restoration of water bodies, assistance in upgradation of government hospitals and others. Following Coimbatore, the district committee will be set up in Trichy next week, and other districts will follow course, accordingly", said the Convenor of Arappor Iyakkam.
