Coimbatore: A felicitation ceremony was held at a private hall in Coimbatore for advocate P P Mohan who won the Gokul Raj murder case.
The Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam and Tamil Vidyal Katchi felicitated advocate P P Mohan who had represented Omalur Gokul Raj's side at court with regard to his murder case.
Former Judge Chandru was a special invitee at the event, with Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam General Secretary K Ramakrishnan, lawyers, and other members of various organizations participating in the ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion, former Justice Chandru said, "I am very happy to be present at this event since Coimbatore is my second hometown. Some political parties have said that there should be a separate law for such incidents after the murder of Shankar Gokulraj. Arjun Sampath might not like this felicitation for Mohan because Mohan was accused of being an Urban Naxal by some people when he appeared in favour of Muslims in the Coimbatore bomb blast case. He said that there is a group to slander an advocate if he appears in favour of an accused."
Justice Chandru also mentioned that foreigners used to be lawyers in India after which courses on law were introduced to raise lawyers from our nation. "Most of them belonged to the Brahmin community which was more than 100 years ago, and there was a major altercation between Indian lawyers and British lawyers. Being an advocate earlier was ancestorial, but a good lawyer is one who is fearless, responsible, dutiful, and does not expect anything in return to fight for the justice of oppressed classes.
The situation has changed much today, as most lawyers accept cases only if their demanded fee is paid, which is actually against a lawyer's morality. An advocate's duty is to fight for the justice of oppressed people and most people in India are oppressed people. P P Mohan is one who fights for them," commended Justice Chandru.
"The appreciation that lawyers get for fighting against the Government is like an insulin boost and such felicitations should be held frequently. At present, it appears that skilled lawyers are not on the side of the oppressed masses, and in times to come, the need of the hour is for lawyers who can fight for these people," he reiterated.
In his response to the felicitation, P P Mohan mentioned Justice Chandru's manners of arguing and his nature. He also shared his own journey as a lawyer and recommended some books to younger law aspirants. P P Mohan was later felicitated with a crown and a garland.
