Coimbatore: The teachers in corporation schools have demanded that the vacancies for teachers be filled up, as they are facing excess workload.

The teachers in Coimbatore Corporation schools have demanded that the 90 vacancies be filled up as early as possible, as the vacancies are causing a shortage in teachers, excess workload, and also fear a gap in educating children.

There are complaints that 90 posts of teachers in Coimbatore Corporation schools are lying vacant causing inconvenience to the students. There are 83 schools functioning under Coimbatore Corporation including 17 Higher Secondary Schools, 11 High Schools, 13 Middle and 42 Primary Schools. At present, 850 teachers are working in 83 schools.

Further, 90 posts of teachers are vacant, according to the Principals. They alleged that the shortage of teachers is likely to increase the workload of the teachers who are currently working and also pose a threat of the teaching gap.

One of the headmasters said that the teachers are at pressure to finish of the syllabus and there is a shortage in primary schools itself. "Many students continue to have difficulty in writing and reading and now due to workload, the teachers are unable to pay special attention to them."

He said that the officials can take decisions in this regard if the ongoing counseling on behalf of the School Education Department is completed. A petition has also been submitted to the authorities to appoint temporary teachers through the Parent Teachers Association as the exams are nearing, he said.
