Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Farmers Association staged a protest at the Coimbatore District Collectorate demanding a hike in the milk procurement price.
The Tamil Nadu Farmers Association showed their dissent by spilling milk on the ground at the Collectorate. Over 10 farmers, including President S Palaniswami participated in the protest. The protestors aired their grievances saying that the farmers have been affected by the rise in prices of seasonal fodder and inputs for a few months, and had been providing cow feed at subsidized rates to the Aavin Milk Cooperative Producers' Society. They said they had now stopped it.
"The prices of products, including cow feed have increased from Rs. 300 to Rs. 500, and Aavin and private companies are buying from milk producers for Rs. 28-29 per litre. But now, Aavin milk is being sold at Rs.50 per litre," lamented the farmers regretting that the prices were not raised for farmers.
The Farmers Association petitioned for the purchase price to be increased by Rs.10 per litre over the present purchase price. They urged the Aavin administration to take preventive measures through procurement centres to prevent diseases that may spread to cattle.
