Coimbatore: The ADMK MLA, Damodaran petitioned the District Collector stating that the indirect elections at Vellalore for Vice President were not held in a democratic manner although ADMK won the elections.
The indirect election for the post of President and Vice President was held yesterday, 26th March in Vellalore Town Panchayat in Coimbatore district. There was a clash between DMK and AIADMK during this indirect election. The police resorted to lathi-charge and dispersed the crowd. During the indirect elections held in the afternoon, for Vice President's post, DMK workers tore the ballot papers reportedly meant for the indirect elections and staged a walkout.
Later, Marudachalam of AIADMK was elected as the President and Ganesan as Vice-President. Podanur police have arrested nine people, including the son of Marudachalam.
AIADMK's legal team led by MLA Damodaran met the District Collector and submitted a petition demanding action against those responsible for the violence.
Later, addressing a press conference, AIADMK legal advisory committee member Inbadurai said democracy was not upheld in the indirect election in Vellalore Town panchayat. "The DMK men deliberately indulged in anarchy and attacked the police with weapons."
A case has been registered against nine AIADMK members in the incident including women, and two women were released by the police yesterday, which he stated that it is undemocratic. He added that the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has a hatred towards Coimbatore. The winning councillors of Vellalore town panchayat do not have proper security and hence the district collector should take steps to provide the proper security and will approach the court in connection with the incident.
He also said that in order to cover up the incident, the DMK deliberately diverted the press conference by saying that there is a corruption complaint against SP Velumani by using the 'Arra Por' (righteous) movement. He added that if the movement is over, let them conduct inspections to unearth the corruption in the Pongal gift package, he said. He also claimed that the DMK's Senathipathi was present there armed and he had the video evidence.
He questioned if anyone appointed him as an election observer.
