Coimbatore: The TNAU Coimbatore hosted the National Youth Conference under the title "From Food Safety to Nutrition Safety: Youth Perspectives".
The National Youth Conference, jointly organised by The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), All India Agricultural Students Association (AIASA) and Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), commenced at the Agriculture University here in Coimbatore, on Thursday, 24th March, 2022. The Conference was held under the theme "From Food Safety to Nutrition Safety: Youth Vision (FSNS 2022)".
Dr. A.S. Krishnamurthy, Executive Vice Chancellor and Registrar, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, in his inaugural address, quoted Thirukkural and stressed the importance of agriculture and the varied opportunities that await the entrepreneurs. Adding that the world's population will rise to 9 billion by 2050, 14 percent of this will be the youth population aged 15-24. He also called upon the youth to become entrepreneurs in the fields of electronic agriculture, remote sensing science and nanoscience.
Dr. Rama. Kathiresan, Vice Chancellor, Annamalai University, mentioned that 51% of women between the ages of 15 and 49 suffer from anemia due to nutritional insecurity. He appealed to young scientific researchers and experienced scientists to engage in agricultural research through multidisciplinary and collaborative research to strengthen nutritional security.
Speaking of the food wastage, Dr. R.C. Agarwal. the Vice President of Education, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi, in his keynote address, urged the government to reduce wastage of food as 3000 liters of water is required to produce 1 kg of paddy and 900 liters of water is required to produce 1 kg of coffee.
Vivek Saurabh, National Secretary, of the All India Students' Association explained the importance of the conference. Mentioning that India is self-sufficient in food production but not in nutrient safety, Dr. M. Kalyanasundaram, Principal (Agriculture), Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, in his address said that noted that India suffers from 14.5 percent hunger due to food shortage and the improved nutrition system of "bio-strengthening" is the best way to overcome nutritional deficiencies.
Dr. T. Raghuchander, National Organising Secretary and Principal (Student Welfare), Tamil Nadu Agricultural University delivered the welcome address, andK. Karthikeyan, State Organising Secretary gave the vote of thanks.
As part of this seminar, book expo and science exhibitions is organized by alumni, rural youth, and arrangements were made to help the students through the guidance of entrepreneurs. As many as 850 participants participated in the conference online and in person. Of these, 474 students have submitted summaries of their studies.
