Forest department officials with the help of sniffer dogs are checking the villages that have run the forest areas of Boluvampatti and Narasipuram in Coimbatore to check the presence of explosives, animal hunting equipment after an 8-year-old female elephant suffered injuries in her mouth consuming country bomb infused food on Wednesday.
An 8-year-old female elephant cub was seriously injured in her mouth after she consumed a country bomb (Avuttu Kai) in the Mullankadu forest area under the Boluvampatti forest range in Coimbatore. The forest department and veterinary doctors, who administered an anesthetic injection to a baby elephant near Thanikandi yesterday, 23rd March, treated the elephant.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the elephant may have suffered injuries in the mouth due to the bite of an explosive like an Avuttu Kai.
Meanwhile, forest department officials are conducting intensive checking operations in the villages adjoining the forest area where the elephant was found with injuries in its mouth. The forest department, with the help of sniffer dog Valavan and trainers, are carrying out intensive searches in Devarayapuram, Vellarukkampalayam, Javvukadu, and other areas near Mullankadu.
Officials said the search operation will continue as no country-made explosives and hunting material is found. However, the animal succumbed to her injuries despite treatments.
