The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an Assistant Commissioner, in the Income Tax department and an Auditor for alleged acceptance of Rs 2.5 lakhs as bribe from a landowner, in the name of Income-tax and lodged the accused in prison.
Coimbatore: The CBI officers on Wednesday arrested an IT Assistant Commissioner, and an auditor dead to rights over charges of graft.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an Assistant Commissioner,in the Income Tax department and an Auditor for alleged acceptance of Rs 2.5 lakhs as bribe from a landowner, in the name of Income-tax and lodged the accused in prison.
Baladandapani, a resident of Peelamedu in Coimbatore, sold his farmland in Alanthurai in 2013, and reportedly, Daniel Raj, the Assistant Commissioner,of Income-tax, Coimbatore, held a raid at Baladandapani's house last month and demanded a payment of income tax for the land sold. He demanded a bribe of Rs 5 lakh from him for not paying the same and the negotiation ended with a Rs 2.5 lakh deal. On the other hand Baladandapani lodged a complaint with the CBI in this regard.
The CBI plotted to trap the IT officer and Baladandapani who arrived at the Income Tax office on their instructions, handed over Rs 50,000 in cash and a cheque for Rs 2 lakh to Daniel. The CBI Inspector Balaji waiting at the place caught Daniel red-handed.
They also arrested auditor Sreedharan, who acted as an intermediary. During interrogation, Daniel said he was unwell and was admitted to the Coimbatore government hospital for medical observation. Daniel and Sreedharan were produced before a CBI court in Coimbatore and sent to jail after tests confirmed that he was unwell.
