Coimbatore: Chairman of Kongu Global Forum(KGF) has met the CEO of Fly Dubai today.

In a statement released to the media, "Kongu Global Forum, Chairman, Sakthivel had a very fruitful meeting with his Excellency, CEO of Fly Dubai, Mr Ghaith Al Ghaith and with Sudhir Sreedharan, Senior Vice President at Dubai Aviation Corporation, UAE, today 23rd March 2022 at 11.00 am UAE standard time in the Headquarters of the Airline.

Fly Dubai serves more than 90 destinations with operations out of Terminal 2 of Dubai International Airport and most importantly it codeshares with Emirates. We are glad to note the keen interest shown by the management of Fly Dubai to operate direct flight service to Coimbatore. They assured us that the necessary seats to India for their operation will be taken up during the next CEPA meeting and our request will be considered favourably.

India and UAE signed the historic Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in February, India’s Consul General to Dubai Aman Puri has said he believes there is potential for trade between both countries to hit $100 billion by 2027.

Coimbatore International Airport is the fifth biggest airport in South India with passengers from seven western districts of Tamil Nadu and two districts in Kerala using the Airport. Coimbatore, the second biggest airport in Tamil Nadu, handled 3 million passengers annually and around 11,000 tons of cargo. Due to the lack of International connectivity, most of the passengers fly out of other airports in South India. Cargo is transferred by road to the nearest airports based on the slot availability.

Agriculture, Education, Healthcare, Industry, Textiles, Services, Tourism and Trade are flourishing in this region. About Rs.60,000 crores of goods and services are exported from this region. Coimbatore region contributed about 40% to the GSDP of the State of Tamil Nadu.

Air Arabia is operating a direct flight service to Coimbatore from Sharjah, which has a overwhelming patronage. The load factor is improving in Scoot which had started recently to fly directly to Singapore. It will be a full flight once the passengers are allowed to travel beyond Singapore. Srilankan airlines plans to restore the flight connections to Colombo shortly.

Our request to Fly Dubai, a code share airline of Emirates, will be to start a direct flight operations from Coimbatore to Dubai which enables an access to the hub at Dubai and connections to many destinations across the world. Post covid, the trend seems to be flying directly to the destinations and if not choose minimum transit points. So, we are confident that a direct flight service between Dubai and Coimbatore will be a milestone in the history of Aviation. It will contribute to the growth of business and investment for everyone."

The direct flight to Dubai has been a long pending request from the business community and public at large from Coimbatore. Despite the Coimbatore International Airport serving 36 lakh people, with two major industrial hubs of Coimbatore and Tirupur, and having the ability to land wide body aircrafts, this service has still not been granted to Coimbatore. If Fly Dubai eventually starts its operations, it will be a most sought after airline service by people on the region for commercial and cargo.
