A section of members of the Dravidar Panpattu Kootiyakkam staged a demonstration in Ukkadam, condemning the Karnataka HC's approval on banning Hijab in educational institutions in Karnataka.

Coimbatore: A section of members of the Dravidar Panpattu Kootiyakkam staged a protest against the Karnataka government's ban on Hijab, at Ukkadam.

With unity in diversity being taught in schools, the public celebrating different cultures and traditions transcending religions, and coming together to help out the needy during calamities, such as the 2015 floods in Chennai or the pandemic all over the world, the ban in wearing Hijab for the Islam girls in Karnataka to their educational institutions has triggered a reaction from varied quarters.

As part of this, a protest demonstration was held at Ukkadam in Coimbatore under the auspices of the Dravidar Panpattu Kootiyakkam.

More than 50 people from 17 organizations, including Dravidian movements, Dalit movements, and Muslim organizations, participated in the protest against the ban on wearing hijab in educational institutions and demanded that the ban be lifted.

Speaking to reporters, Venmani, coordinator of the joint movement, said the ban was imposed against social harmony in the country and to threaten minorities and condemned the Sangh Parivar organizations and stated that the ruling BJP at the Centre are trying to implement it across the country.

He said the steps being taken by the Ruling DMK government in Tamil Nadu in this regard were constructive and welcomed the actions like the arrest of a person under the Goondas Act for threatening a voter wearing a hijab in Madurai.
